Contract
In this project FIELD Engineers together with WALZ Group assessed structures and planned a removal of aged conveyor galleries. This project involved removing galleries up to 155 t while considering corrosion, a busy shipping schedule, and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
FIELD and WALZ were honoured to receive the prestigious CICA Project of the Year Award in 2019 for this work.
Considerations
- Gallery spans weighed up to 155 tonnes.
- Galleries were heavily corroded and structurally compromised, adding complexity to lift planning.
- Work could not disturb the busy port shipping schedule.
- The work could not endanger the nearby Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Challenges & Approaches
Detailed risk assessments on both the lift and the overall project set the scope of engineering analysis.
Roadway (deck units) were stripped out of the structure to reduce weight in a process designed with a 30-minute cycle time.
Gantry sections were supported and cut in half (using an innovative “marine forklift”) to allow for a smaller crane and barge to fit within the wharf structure, away from coal ships.
Innovative approaches certified with full engineering analysis allowed the above methods, and prevented disturbance to surrounding structures during removal.
You can read more detail about the project in the Cranes and Lifting magazine article.
SUCCESS:
Innovative approaches to the complex aspects of the project allowed a fast, efficient and safe removal process. Industry peers recognised the success of this project with the CICA 2019 Project of the Year Award.
Outcomes
Lift windows took into account shipping schedules, tides and weather, and all lifts executed according to plan. This saved time and money.
All structural elements were inspected and assessed with detailed mass and CoG calculations verified on site, ensuring no surprises during lifts.
Engineering-specific risk assessment gave the crane crew input into the lift planning, design and analysis processes.
