Contract
In this project, FIELD Engineers was approached by John Holland SMP for weighing of a 1,250 tonne shiploader that was to be transported from Brisbane to Abbot Point Coal Terminal by the heavy lift ship The Happy Buccaneer. The shiploader was weighed to determine the total mass and COG to ensure smooth lift operations, to confirm final wharf loadings, and to confirm heavy lift ship selection.
Considerations
- Shiploader mass close to limit of heavy lift ship capacity.
- COG accuracy crucial to stability during lifting.
- Mass and COG data needed to be confirmed to ensure compliance with wharf structure design.
- Could not be lifted with conventional cranes due to size.
Challenges & Approaches
The irregular size and shape of the structure added a layer of complexity to the weighing procedure. However, the FIELD Engineers’ heavy weighing system is able to be expanded to suit any size object and is modular to facilitate the weighing of irregularly shaped objects.
SUCCESS:
The 1,250 tonne shiploader was transported from Brisbane to the Abbot Point Coal Terminal without delay or incident.
Outcomes
The non-invasive weighing procedure was conducted with no disturbance to construction schedule allowing shipping and delivery to occur on-time.
The precise COG data allowed the over-water lifting operations to be conducted quickly. The mass verification lead to the confirmation of the wharf loadings.
The mass of the load was verified prior to mobilisation of heavy lift ship. Considerable saving was achieved by optimising the use of the heavy lift ship engaged for the project.
