CHPP laser scanning cuts costs for upgrade shutdown

Situation

Coppabella Mine needed to carry out multiple upgrades to their coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP), which required highly accurate measurements. However, downtime for a CHPP is very expensive and hand measurements are slow and prone to error. Peabody Energy engaged FIELD Engineers to laser scan the CHPP and surrounding structures to prepare for the upgrades, setting a condition that the work be completed in just 7 days.

Action

With limited time and access, FIELD developed a detailed scanning plan to maximise data collected at each set-up and minimise any site disruption.

Result

The scans were completed within the 1-week timeframe. The data collected from this scan allowed detailed design of new desliming cyclones, replacing a 180-t surge bin, stabilising a ROM hopper support structure and carrying out a spiral bank and magnetic separator upgrade feasibility study. Accuracy of the information meant precise new component design that reduced fitting up on site. In addition, the data can be used to build models for other areas without the need to re-visit the site, reducing costs for any future upgrades. This case shows how FIELD’s expertise in data collection and analysis delivered a single well-done job that would then continue to deliver on reducing costs into the future.
