In 2023, global leader in wind turbine lifting equipment Liftra, was preparing to bring their innovative self-hoisting crane into the Australian market. With a track record in Europe, North America and Asia, this crane removes the need for large mobile cranes in turbine maintenance, offering considerable cost advantages to turbine owners, especially in remote locations in Australia. As the market trailblazer in this crane type, however, Liftra first needed to navigate Australia’s regulatory and industry environment and engaged FIELD Engineers to assist in this process.
FIELD Engineers conducted a dual role, both liaising with state regulators on requirements for design registration and carrying out an independent design verification to Australian standards. Engineers reviewed design calculations, certifications, testing footage, and carried out on-site testing and measurements at the first deployment of the crane in Australia. The collaborative process built a rationale for applying the structure of Australian Standards to the design and ensured any differences between international and Australian standard expectations were addressed with equivalent safety.
FIELD Engineers established certainty for the crane’s regulatory requirements and verified that the crane design met all Australian Standard requirements.
