Crane Inspections
In 2020, the Lihir Gold Mine (one of the largest gold mines in the world) was facing the need to carry out third-party inspections on more than 200 overhead cranes amid the turmoil of the COVID-19 pandemic. These inspections require equipment to shut down for structural examination, operation and load testing, creating disruption to operations, especially for cranes operating in a corrosive environment and requiring careful attention to structural integrity. Lihir engaged FIELD Engineers to complete the inspections with minimal disruption.
FIELD Engineers inspector Mark Fenech travelled to PNG, with the wider FIELD team navigating the complex quarantine requirements. Mark has over 20 years’ experience in maintenance and inspection of high-risk plant and completed the work in minimum time, including risk assessing and prioritising all maintenance items. The FIELD office team provided reporting support to further minimise time on site.
Despite the difficult conditions, the inspection program was completed with minimum disruption to operations. Prioritised maintenance items also allowed the site to target their maintenance spend. In this case, FIELD’s combination of expertise in inspections combined with logistical support resulted in going beyond just compliance and creating a cost-effective outcome for the site.
